Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She's worked as an editor since the year 1995. She created Feminist Frequency which is a website with videos and guest posts analyzing the portrayals of females in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American media critic and blog writer that has received prizes for her work, is a feminist blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-for profit educational site that explores the representation of women in pop culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. Aiming to dispel the myths that are associated with women in pop culture, she has also been working to address issues relating to harassing women targeted by the media and other classes of people online. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she is extremely sought-after and has spoken at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. While a student at university Sarkeesian was interested in the issues surrounding gender identity and women's rights in the early stages. A woman with ambitions to launch a web-series that would examine the gender representation of video games was targeted in the internet campaign. But the harassment did not hinder her. It only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. In recognition of the many accomplishments she's made to feminism, she is recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of the media, and she founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit explores the portrayals of women in popular culture of today.
